the upside of ADHD is that it makes you a fucking genius

the downside is that you don’t get to decide when and for how long you’re a genius.

Or what you are going to be a genius about.

You have a big work project?

Nah. You’re now a genius at making boardgames. For 7 hours.

You’d think I would be smarter than I am simply because my brain works so fast. But that is often not the case. I am thinking six million thoughts a second, and more often than not every single one of them is stupid. Haha

You wouldn’t make a steak out of human meat. You would make a pork chop. And I don’t like sweet meats so I wouldn’t try it, no.

spongebob-autisticquestions:

To other autistic people, do you have an “odd sleeping schedule”?

It’s called my psychiatrist texts me at 10 and reminds me that sleep is a thing that should occur well before 2 am.

Otherwise I’d be up to wee hours of the morning and sleep till noon.

Actually a lot of folks with autism/ADHD have a sleep phase disorder - either delayed, advanced, non-24hr, or irregular sleep-wake. It’s super common but gets brushed off as either insomnia, hyperfixation, or a conscious choice. In my experience, most neurodivergent people who have difficulty with sleep regulation have one of these. Treatment usually includes a combination of melatonin supplements, lightbox therapy, and limiting bright lights at night.

Delayed sleep phase disorder means that if you go to sleep when you’re sleepy and get up when you’re done sleeping then you’re going to bed and getting up at least 2 hours later than neurotypical people with “normal” circadian rhythm.

It’s literally defined as a disorder because if you sleep the way your body and brain wants to sleep then that will be in conflict with the opening hours of things like schools, and banks, and your job.

If it wasn’t for those things, sleeping when you’re sleepy and getting up when you’re done sleeping wouldn’t cause any issue.

In fact, by forcing your body out of it’s natural rhythm, even when doing all the treatment things of light control and melatonin supplementation, you are liable to develop symptoms of sleep deprivation.
These symptoms won’t be severe to begin with but will get progressively worse over time.

These symptoms are things like:
- reduced attention span
- slowed reaction times
- difficulty focusing
- memory issues
- headaches
- light sensitivity
- difficulty with thermoregulation of body (constantly feeling cold/hot and body temperature fluctuations)
- reduced awareness of surroundings
- weakened immune symptoms
etc, etc, etc…

If enough sleep deprivation builds up a person may even develop full blown psychosis.

If any of these symptoms already exist for you (f.ex. if you have chronic pain issues, ADHD, or any number of neurodivergencies) the slowly building sleep deprivation of forcing yourself to get up 2+ hours earlier than your body and brain naturally wakes up at will make those symptoms much worse.

If you have ADHD, you’re Extremely Likely to have delayed sleep phase disorder.

And it’s only a “disorder” because our social environment won’t let us rest when we need it resulting in literally making us sick.

Why do you think we burn out so hard?

I have ADHD and find I get the best sleep during the day. When I can block out the sun effectively that is. I can maintain a semi-diurnal sleep schedule when absolutely necessary but will never be as well rested as when sleeping between noon and 20:00-ish. Mind you it is 13:52 now, almost two hours past when I would like to be asleep but I am awake despite being exhausted. So who knows!

daily fucking reminder that you are allowed to want attention and that does not make you a bad person.

spicy-vagina-tacos:

in case no one’s told you in a while. you are valid.

I am comfortable begging for attention. Shameless plug my YouTube channel sometimes. beat the rush. Subscribe while I am still reveling on obscurity! Get in on the ground floor! Haha

Not perfect but I am getting there. Almost done with beginner lessons and will be soon finding out what “explorer” means. Do need to do some outside learning because I am aware of partitive speech but not entirely sure when to use it and when not to. Don’t think Duolingo is totally sure.

Puhun vain vähän suomea.
